The 1890′s were watershed years, what does that mean?

I am writing an essay about the 1890′s and he told us to focus upon its ‘watershed importance’ as well as the development of a psychic crisis.
What is a watershed importance?!!

In the context of history, “watershed” years are an important point of division or transition between two phases.

A critical point or period that marks a division or a change of course; a turning point.

For example, “The 1960s were a watershed pointin modern American history, a time that forever changed American social attitudes”

So he’s asking you to focus on what happened at in 1890 that made it a critical period, e.g. a watershed moment in time?
